Nonprofit Partnership

HandsOn Bay Area (HOBA) partners with more than 200 nonprofits across the Bay Area to set up ongoing or one-time service projects for volunteers to attend where they help to sustain organizations' programs, restore (structural and environmental) surroundings and support services offered to their clients.

HOBA offers its nonprofit partners two types of volunteer engagement opportunities:

  1. Community Calendar Program
Ongoing volunteer projects, service-learning and leadership-development opportunities.
  2. Corporate Programs
Projects that corporate employees of HOBA's Hands@Work program can complete in one day.

What are the basics in being a nonprofit partner with HOBA?

Getting started guidelines for all partner agencies:

  • All agencies must be registered 501(c) 3 organizations; government departments or programs; or schools.
  • Do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, marital or veteran status, or the presence of a non-related medical condition or disability.
  • Take responsibility for paying for required background checks or fingerprinting.

How can my nonprofit participate on the Project Calendar?

HOBA reviews its community calendar of ongoing projects on a regular basis and is always looking for new opportunities for our volunteers. Although every agency and volunteer opportunity is unique, the following basic project criteria are used in determining future HOBA calendar projects. All of our projects are managed and led by HOBA-trained Project Leaders that serve as the liaison between the agencies and the group of volunteers. If you are simply looking for a place to list your agency's volunteer opportunities, please contact the Volunteer Center [(415) 982-8999] in your area.

* Please note that space availability, as well as volunteer interest play a part in choosing volunteer projects for our Community Calendar.

Guidelines for community projects:

  • Project location must be in San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa or Marin Counties.
  • Project hours: Weeknights after 5:30pm (2-3 hours), Weekends between 8am and 4pm (2-5 hours).
  • Project must be able to accommodate a minimum of 4 volunteers.
  • Project must be set up at least 6-8 weeks ahead of time in order to be added in our monthly calendar.
  • Nonprofit must work with HOBA to schedule projects or service-learning events at least 4 times each calendar year.
  • Project must NOT require volunteers to attend a separate and extensive agency orientation.
  • Project must have an agency staff present on site at all times to oversee the tasks, answer questions and help educate volunteers by presenting a brief introduction (5 minutes) about the organization and the particular project.
  • Project must ensure that the actual tasks given to volunteers are consistent with the project description that HOBA posts on its online Project Calendar.
  • Project must begin and end in accordance to the agreement between HOBA and the agency.
  • Most general and all specialized supplies, materials, recreation fees and facilities (such as restrooms) must be provided by the agency unless previously discussed and approved by a HOBA staff member.
  • The project must NOT be a fundraising or political event.

How can my nonprofit get corporate groups to volunteer?

HOBA's corporate projects are a great opportunity to do the major projects your agency has been putting off. Ideas include painting, cleaning, organizing and gardening.

It is amazing what a large group of people, typically 25 or more can do to transform your agency or school. Corporate volunteers are not a good choice for your pre-planned events that have a specific date and time. They work well for projects that can be done on a flexible schedule. The more defined the project scope, the easier to match projects with corporations according to their interests. Please Contact Us to help get this type of project organized.

Guidelines for corporate projects:
Most of the guidelines for community projects listed above also apply, especially the major DON’Ts, but there are few corporate-specific guidelines to follow:

  • Our corporate partners select the projects they want to work on, not HOBA.
  • Project location can be in any of the 9 Bay Area counties (or even a little beyond). It usually depends on where the corporation is located.
  • The vast majority of corporate projects are done during the Monday - Friday, 9 - 5 work week.
  • In general, these projects are for large groups, typically 25 or more people at a time.
  • Projects should be structured to be done in a day and to have a big, tangible impact on your organization.
  • Projects must NOT require volunteers to attend a separate agency orientation.
  • HOBA can provide the tools necessary to do most projects.
  • Generally (but not always) all reasonable project supplies will be covered – this is great for painting and gardening projects.
  • Most general and all specialized supplies, materials and recreation fees must be provided by the agency unless previously discussed and approved by a HOBA staff member.
  • Projects must NOT use scaffolding or power tools.
  • An agency representative must be present for the entire duration of the project.
  • These projects must NOT be a fundraising or political event.
  • Do you have a contractor who works with your agency? If they are willing to teach and direct volunteers there is an opportunity to do even more involved projects than HOBA can normally support.
